Our approach to AI

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a powerful tool that when used effectively and ethically, has the power to enhance human capabilities and unlock human potential.

Ufi is committed to leveraging AI in ways that support innovation, empower individuals and uphold our core values of responsibility and integrity. This statement outlines how we ensure the Ufi team, Trustees and contractors are using AI responsibly, ethically and in alignment with our mission to catalyse transformational change in vocational learning.

Our AI principles

Mission alignment
AI use must support our goal of improving access to vocational learning and outcomes for adult learners, especially those furthest from opportunity.

Equity and access
We will use AI in ways that reduce – not reinforce – barriers to learning and opportunity.

Accountability
Human oversight will be maintained for all AI-supported decisions. Staff remain responsible for outputs and impacts.

Fairness and non-discrimination
That human oversight will be used to identify any bias in AI generated content and ensure inclusive outcomes.

Transparency
We will be open about when and how AI is used, especially in learner-facing contexts.

Reliability and Accuracy
We will select tools that are tested, validated, and appropriate for their intended use.

Trust
We will maintain the trust of learners, partners, and stakeholders by using AI responsibly and ethically.

Data governance and privacy

We will:

  • follow GDPR and other applicable data protection laws
  • apply the principle of least privilege to data access
  • use multi-factor authentication and data minimisation practices
  • require vendors to disclose their data handling and training practices.

Vendor and tool selection

We will prioritise AI tools that:

  • allow opt-out from model training
  • have experience working with nonprofits or education providers
  • provide transparency on data use and model behaviour.

We are open to new tools. Staff are encouraged to experiment and bring new tools to the attention of the management team.

Training and culture

All staff will receive:

  • regular AI literacy training
  • data protection and ethics training
  • guidance on responsible experimentation and innovation

AI use by applicants and assessors

In addition to our internal approach to AI, we also provide specific guidance for organisations applying for our funding, and for the external assessors who help to assess the grant applications we receive.
