Using AI: applying for Ufi funding

Artificial Intelligence is a powerful tool that when used effectively and ethically, has the power to enhance human capabilities and unlock human potential. Ufi is committed to leveraging AI in ways that support innovation, empower individuals, and uphold our core values of responsibility and integrity.

Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools offer potential benefits but also present challenges and risks. This statement outlines Ufi’s policy regarding the use of Generative Artificial Intelligence when applying for Ufi grant funding or investment.

Definitions

Generative AI is a type of artificial intelligence which can be used to create new content (for example, text, code, images, videos or music referred to as output). AI uses machine learning algorithms to model and to train on large data sets.

Hallucinations are outputs which may initially appear to be believable but are in fact highly inaccurate or fabricated including, but not limited to, references that sound plausible but don’t exist.

What we expect from applicants and organisations applying to Ufi for grant funding or investment

Ufi gathers information on generative AI use for transparency and monitoring purposes. This includes asking applicants to disclose any use of generative AI on their grant application form. The use of AI does not affect the assessment process nor the decision to award either grant funding or investment.

Applicants are responsible for the content of applications and the information provided to us. You must:

  • be honest, transparent and accountable about your use of generative AI tools in your application
  • protect confidential information and personal data by not inputting it into generative AI tools
  • ensure the outputs from generative AI tools used in your applications are valid. This includes removing any false, misleading or hallucinated information
  • be aware of third party intellectual property rights (where the rights to the material belong to someone else) when using AI tools in an application, and only use information from third party sources with consent from the relevant copyright holder

We recommend organisations provide guidance to their staff on how to use AI responsibly.

The expectations listed above apply equally to Ufi. We will respect confidential information and will declare any use of generative AI in the administration of grant applications.

AI use by Ufi and assessors

In addition to our policy on AI use by applicants, we also provide specific guidance for the Ufi team, Trustees and contractors, and for the external assessors who help to assess the funding applications we receive.
