Using AI: external assessors
Artificial Intelligence is a powerful tool that when used effectively and ethically, has the power to enhance human capabilities and unlock human potential. Ufi is committed to leveraging AI in ways that support innovation, empower individuals, and uphold our core values of responsibility and integrity.
Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools offer potential benefits but also present challenges and risks. This statement outlines Ufi’s policy regarding the use of Generative Artificial Intelligence when assessing applications for Ufi funding.
Definitions
Generative AI is a type of artificial intelligence which can be used to create new content (for example, text, code, images, videos or music referred to as output). AI uses machine learning algorithms to model and to train on large data sets.
Hallucinations are outputs which may initially appear to be believable but are in fact highly inaccurate or fabricated including, but not limited to, references that sound plausible but don’t exist.
What we expect from our expert reviewers and advisory panel members
We very much value the breadth and depth of knowledge and experience that our expert reviewers bring to the assessment of our grant applications. Generative AI tools have the potential to enhance this function, but would need to do so without compromising the unique value assessor expertise brings to the process.
AI tools are changing rapidly. However, at this time, concerns remain relating to transparency, protection of confidential information, potential for hallucinations and protection of third party intellectual property rights.
Until these concerns have been resolved satisfactorily, expert reviewers and advisory panel members must not input any content from our confidential grant applications or reviews into, or otherwise use, generative AI tools to develop their expert review feedback. Doing this may breach the confidentiality agreement that expert reviewers agree to.
