Ufi celebrates investment in new £6.75 million WorkerTech Fund

Ufi is proud to announce our investment into a new £6.75m fund focused on backing start-ups using tech to improve jobs, skills and prospects for workers experiencing low pay and precarious employment.

As new technologies continue to change how companies manage their workforce, workers are facing more disruption and displacement than ever before. The WorkerTech Fund was developed to fund and scale start-ups that are using technology to help workers benefit from this transition – through better pay, terms and condition, improved skills and providing pathways to progression and better prospects. Managed by our strategic partners the Resolution Foundation and backed by a coalition of mission-aligned investors, the WorkerTech Fund is focused on start-ups using technology to help adults thrive in work.

Investors in the first close of the fund, which has a total target of £9 million, include: The Resolution Foundation, Ufi VocTech Trust, Resolution Trust, Better Society Capital, Joseph Rowntree Foundation, Friends Provident Foundation, Fusion21 Foundation, This Day Foundation, Shaw Trust and Lightbulb Trust.

Rebecca Garrod-Waters, CEO of Ufi VocTech Trust said:

“We’re proud to be an initial investor in the WorkerTech Fund. From inception, we’ve championed this fund because we believe socially impactful investment in key technologies is a powerful tool for building a better UK – economically and socially. This fund marks a significant step forward in supporting innovation that empowers workers and supports those furthest from opportunity.”

The fund will provide equity investments of between £75,000 and £200,000 at pre-seed and seed stages and can also make quasi-equity investments. Uniquely, ventures will have access to the pioneering research and expertise of the Resolution Foundation and other investors, helping founders to identify workplace problems and develop practical, tech-enabled solutions for lasting change.

TaskHer's platform is connecting homeowners with skilled tradeswomen in a sector where 97.6% of the workforce are men.

Growing the WorkerTech sector

The new fund builds on the success of the £1.5 million WorkerTech Partnership, led by Resolution Foundation and supported by Ufi VocTech Trust and others. Since 2021 the partnership has supported and scaled 15 companies reaching over 358,000 workers, with more than 20,000 actively using portfolio companies’ services to improve their working lives. Most importantly, over 5,600 workers have experienced transformational changes in their pay, prospects, power, or wellbeing – demonstrating that purpose-driven technology can create meaningful change.

Ventures have included:

TaskHer – A platform connecting skilled tradeswomen with homeowners who actively want to book women for their jobs. It has connected more than 650 tradeswomen in a sector where 97.6% of the workforce are men, ensuring fair rates of pay and developing a supportive professional community.

Organise – an App platform that brings workers together to collectively seek better terms and conditions. Last year, Organise delivered a significant win for workers: securing a pay rise worth over £2,017 annually for G4S night shift workers. As one worker said: “After 18 months of being ignored, we finally have the raise we’ve been waiting for. It’s given me hope again.”

Valla – a legal tech platform that helps people resolve workplace issues without the need for expensive lawyers. Kira, a Black disabled woman in her twenties who was forced out of her job after being repeatedly denied reasonable adjustments, said of the service: “I felt empowered for the first time since leaving my job. It gave me my voice back.”
