Belonging through bytes: Inclusive AI learning for marginalised adults in Wales

Swansea MAD

Vocational learning for adults in Wales is often not accessible or inclusive and does not reflect the digital tools used in modern workplaces. Many learners face significant barriers to developing the skills needed for secure employment, particularly those affected by factors such as low income, poor health, unstable housing, or limited access to digital tools. A lack of access to meaningful digital learning worsens these inequalities. Despite widespread recognition that digital skills are essential, many adults lack opportunities to build them, and existing employability provision does not reflect real working environments.

This project will develop a mobile-first, AI-enabled learning platform to help learners build communication, problem solving, task management and digital skills through interactive guided tasks and real-world scenarios. Designed to run on low-spec devices and common browsers, the platform will be accessible to those with limited access to technology. The approach will include co-design with learners who have lived experience, alongside input from employers to shape content and progression pathways.

The platform aims to better prepare learners for real workplace contexts while supporting employers to access a more diverse talent pool. By working with Adult Learning Wales, the project can reach more learners and inform inclusive digital provision across the sector. Evaluation with Swansea University will generate evidence to support wider adoption and future growth. Together, these partnerships will support Swansea MAD to make a meaningful difference to local learners and inform practice beyond the initial pilot.
