Smart pathways into employment

First Step Trust

First Step Trust know that confidence with written tests is a significant barrier to learning, especially for those furthest from opportunity. With support from Ufi in 2021, they tested whether augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and video could be integrated into their motor vehicle maintenance programmes for their learners, many of whom are long-term unemployed or have experience in secure mental health facilities. Their solution allowed learners to practice and demonstrate skills in a virtual garage without needing to read or write. This approach was successfully tested in their physical garage and secure mental health facilities, sparking interest across several health trusts. Testing showed that using VR and video for learning boosted learners' confidence, reduced stress, increased enthusiasm, and motivated them to return for additional sessions. Since then, First Step Trust has developed an accredited 10-module programme, helping 800 people take their first steps into learning.

For this project, First Step Trust will scale their approach across the UK by enhancing the programme with a new VR module focused on electric vehicle (EV) maintenance. The EV industry is growing rapidly in the UK yet there is an increasing shortage of qualified EV technicians. The project will develop a platform and licensing model to enable delivery across the UK. As part of the project, First Step Trust will also be working with Halfords Autocentres to develop a new approach to their apprenticeship training programme that will incorporate the blended VR solution, making career pathways into vehicle maintenance apprenticeships more accessible and effective for learners.

First Step Trust bring decades of insight and expertise on creating pathways into employment. Their strong industry partnerships will support the programme’s long-term sustainability, providing routes into work for those furthest from opportunity.
