Ufi and iDEA

Creating a step-change in digital skills and confidence for vocational learners in the UK

Our partnership with iDEA will leverage the reach of the iDEA platform to seek wider insights into learner behaviour and experience in support of our shared mission to utilise the power of digital to open up access and enhance learning.

The iDEA platform demonstrates exceptionally well how scalable digital tools can open access to a very large number of learners. Together, we will extend the iDEA offer, with a focus on improving access, motivation, and retention for learners most impacted by the digital divide.

Ufi’s steady support over the years has helped iDEA to develop its vocational offering and to grow the project's reach substantially across the UK. We are proud to be working in partnership with Ufi VocTech Trust to maximise iDEA’s impact and significantly increase the digital skills, confidence, and success of vocational learners in the UK.

Background

Since 2017 Ufi has supported the development of the iDEA platform, which helps learners gain the confidence to find work or move-up in their work by helping them develop digital and vocational skills.

With just over 1.3 million registered users, the iDEA platform demonstrates exceptionally well how scalable digital tools can open access to a very large number of learners.  There are some important lessons that can be applied to related vocational subjects from examining the success of the fast-growing iDEA platform and using its reach to explore some of the key themes in Ufi’s VocTech Challenge.

The partnership will extend the range of options available on iDEA, developing the Gold Award and exploring the importance of place-based interventions to support communities most impacted by the digital divide.

The iDEA platform

Launched in 2017, the Inspiring Digital Enterprise Award, known as iDEA is an international award winning programme that helps learners develop digital, enterprise and employability skills for free.

Through a series of online challenges, learners can earn career-enhancing badges, unlock new opportunities and, ultimately, gain industry-recognised Awards.

Ufi supported the development of the Bronze and Silver levels, working with iDEA to develop vocational badges that are tied to employer needs.

More than 10 million iDEA badges have been completed to date.

iDEA Gold Level

Vocational pathways using advanced digital skills

Gold level badges are now being created to address specific skills deficits identified by employers.

iDEA will be working with innovative employers and industry experts to create the learning content and will regularly seek feedback from its audience of vocational learners and their organisers throughout the development of the Gold Award.

Beta testing for Gold Level badges will begin in May 2022 with the launch planned for late Summer.

Action research to support the Ufi VocTech Challenge

The reach of the iDEA platform allows it to be used to offer wider insights into learner behaviour and experience.  The partnership with Ufi will help surface lessons and insights around how iDEA can be deployed to improve access, motivation, and retention for learners through two or more place-based pilots. Particular focus will be given to supporting those learners most impacted by the digital divide.

Insights from the research will inform how we can create an even more supportive learning environment; an environment which builds the confidence and digital skills of people most impacted by the digital divide (and their organisers) to become more active and independent learners.
